Eater's Unite!

Advocating for policy that supports resilient systems

Eaters UNITE! supports healthy food and farming practices on the local, state, and national levels. We also raise awareness and inspire action around food and farming issues in collaboration with other like-minded organizations, including the Environmental Working Group and Green Money Journal.

As part of this effort to support healthy food initiatives, Theo Ferguson -- Vital Systems' founder and trustee -- served as a plenary speaker at the recent Justice Begins with Seeds Conference in Seattle, Washington. The conference specifically focused on Washington State's November Proposition I-522 that would require labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Hundreds of local activists, entrepreneurs, funders, and visionaries greeted keynote speaker, Vendana Shiva, to applaud her message on the important of science, technology, ecology and planting non-GMO local organic "Gardens of Hope."

In the plenary session "Investing in My Values," Theo presented the basic principles required to recognize eight kinds of capital: intelligence, education, experience, assets (including money), natural capital, time and the ability to enroll and educate. And since everyone posesses these kinds of capital, every choice becomes an investment. Beginning with the need to reduce disparities of income and wealth, the question becomes: "are we investing our capital in way that will lead us to the kind of future into which we want to live?"

At the conference, Theo also presented Vital Systems' approach of using Embodied Language to understand the tangible ways in which our investments impact individuals, as well as local communities, families, ecosystems, and indigenous cultures.
